Favorite T-shirt Sayings

It’s July and catalogues will soon flood our mailboxes in anticipation of the Christmas season. Confession: I like to look at them.

My favorites are the T-shirts with messages.

I have one for writers that says, “Even if it’s crap, put it on the page.” Good advice for those of us who write with only a vague outline. It means revisions will be long and complicated, but like Nora Roberts says, “You can’t edit a blank page.” I’m sure that one’s on a shirt somewhere.

My favorite author T-shirt is one Author Sharon Hamilton gave me. It says, “Go to bed with a romance novel, or someone who writes one.” Hmm.

Lately I’ve been looking at ones with positive messages: Believe, Every Day is a New Beginning, Safer Stronger Sooner. The last one is on the T-shirts of the therapists at the rehabilitation hospital where my spouse is housed. It’s their logo and it’s a good one.

My favorite T-shirt when I worked full time at a day job was Illegitimi Non Carborundum which loosely translated means Don’t Let the Bastards Get You Down. It was on my screen saver, too. I admit it raised a few eyebrows, but most didn’t pay any attention to it, or never took Latin in high school.

When using social media, ads pop up advertising T-shirts with all kinds of messages. You can find ones about cats, dogs, fish, bears, elephants, chickens, you name it. I’ve purchased dog T-shirts for friends and I have sleeping tee-shirts with messages. One says Bear Hug. Another says Sleeps with Dogs. The latter was a gift from my Grandog, Jax.

Lately I’ve become fond of the ones about wine. My favorites are “It’s after five, whine time,” and “Wine is a hug in a glass.”

You will find a T-shirt on any subject in those catalogues coming your way. The messages will capture your hobbies, your heritage, or your mood. And if you’re brave enough to wear it outside the house, it will give strangers a clue to your personality.

Right now I should be wearing a T-shirt that says, Keep Calm and Carry On.

I think I’ll order one.

  1. My favorite, seen while cruising in Mexico:

    Life is uncertain–
    Eat dessert first!

The name of their boat? “Dessert First”

I hope Mark is doing better every day and eating lots of desserts to make up for those “grindstone” years.
